1,4-butanediol (BDO) Chemical properties of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) Product name: 1,4-butanediol Chemical formula of 1,4-butanediol: C 4H 10O 2 Other chemical names of 1,4-butanediol: 1,4-butylene glycol (BG); 1,4-BG, 1,4-dihydroxybutane, tetramethyleneglycol (TMG), 1,4-butandiol, Butane-1,4 – diol. CAS: 110-63-4, EC: 203-786-5 What is the chemical compound of 1,4-butanediol? It is a 4-atom glycol with a simple chain structure, with hydroxyl groups at the ends. It dissolves well in water. State of aggregation Below 20 ℃ occurs in the solid state, it can be melted by gently heating. In the liquid state, it is colorless. Boiling point 230 ℃ Melting and freezing point 20℃ Flash point 135 ℃ Auto-ignition temperature 385 ℃ Freezing point 20.1 pH 7-8 Storage 1,4-BG is a hygroscopic compound, so the container in which it is stored must be sealed with dry nitrogen. The optimal storage temperature is 25-40 ℃. Application of 1,4-butanediol 1,4- butanediol is a versatile intermediate in industry. It is primarily used in the production of polyurethanes. It is widely used as an industrial solvent. It is used as a solvent for plastics, polyurethanes and flexible fibers. 1,4-BG is used in the production of butylene terephthalate, thermoplastic polyester, and to obtain tetrahydrofuran, butyrolactones and polymeric plasticisers. Butanediol and its derivatives are used in many aspects in the chemical industry, such as in the production of polyurethanes, solvents, electronic chemistry and flexible fibers. 1,4-Butanediol is used in the synthesis of epothilones, i.e. anticancer drugs. However, the largest application of 1,4-butanediol is in the production of tetrahydrofuran (THF), used in the manufacture of polytetramethylene glycol, which is included in Spandex fibres, urethane elastomers and copolyester ethers. It is also widely used as a solvent in the chemical industry. 1,4-Butanediol is also a curing agent for thermoplastic urethanes, polyester plasticizers and paints. Dehydration in the presence of phosphoric acid produces tetrahydrofuran, which is a solvent that is used in various fields. It acts as an intermediate and is used to produce polytetramethylene glycol (PTMEG), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyurethane (PU). 1,4-Butanediol has also found use as an industrial remover and adhesive remover. It is used as a plasticizer (e.g. in polyesters and celluloses) and as a carrier solvent in printing ink, cleaner, adhesive (in leather, plastics, polyester laminates and polyurethane footwear). Use of 1,4 butanediol:

  • a versatile solvent;
  • as an intermediate for the synthesis of various substances, e.g. γ-Butyrolactone (GBL);
  • as a plasticizer instead of glycerin;
  • for the production of other compounds and products, e.g. polybutylene terephthalate
  • in the manufacture of reactive diluents;
  • in the manufacture of instrument disinfectants;
  • As carrier fluid for ultrasonic applications, e.g. furniture degreasing;
  • in epoxy resins;
  • in the production of floor remover, paint thinner;
  • in the manufacture of skirting boards;
  • An ingredient in cleaning agents and printer inks;
  • used in the synthesis of anticancer drugs;
  • as an intermediate product for the production of spandex fibres.

It is sometimes used as a substitute for the illegal substances GBL and GBH. However, it is just as dangerous. Effects on the body A very strong toxic reaction can occur after ingestion. It has intoxicating and narcotic effects. Causes drowsiness. Severe dizziness and headache may occur after ingestion, as well as vomiting. In the body it is converted into GBH. Slows down the work of the brain, which in extreme cases may cause unconsciousness, as well as dangerous slowing of breathing and even death. First aid If swallowed, contact physician or poison treatment center immediately. Rinse out mouth. If fumes have been inhaled, move victim to fresh air. Call a physician in case of severe symptoms. If 1,4-butanediol has come into contact with skin or eyes – rinse abundantly with water. You can buy 1,4 butanediol online in our store
